About the Man and the Art
Mark Pace as John Penn
Mark Pace is the renowned curator of the North Carolina Room in the Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford. In addition to being a local historian extraordinaire, Pace recreated and personified a colonial patriot from Granville County, John Penn, a lawyer and resident of Stovall. Pace gives portrayals of Penn all over the region. Penn’s claim to fame is that he is one of three signers of the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina.
Artist: Frank Timberlake
Our artist, Frank Timberlake, created and patented his own form of art, PhoArt®. Like Penn, Timberlake is also from Stovall in Granville County and captured Mark Pace portraying Penn at an event at St. John’s Episcopal Church (Nutbush Anglican Church prior to 1776) in Williamsboro, North Carolina. Williamsboro missed being the capital of North Carolina by just two votes, and though in Vance County now, was in Granville County.
